UTRA has donated to the library fund in the past, but in June 1984, the Board established Employee Assistance Program guidelines for ratification at the October General Meeting at which time $500 was given to the EAP. The funds were to be used to assist UT employees who needed help in financial crisis. It was used for rent, personal items, food, KUB bills, car repair, transportation costs, and living expenses. Individuals could contribute to this fund. The amount was part of the budget line item through the 1988-89 Budget. In April 1989, $700 had been given to this program that year. The 1989-90 Budget showed an item for $700 to EAP, which increased to $1000 in 1990-91, continued the following year, and $1225 was allocated in 1992-93. These funds were administered by the UTFCU and referred to as Benefits Funds. In 1993-94, $400 was spent on the EAP.
In April 1996, the Budget Committee established a scholarship fund for UT students with a proposed $1000 budget item. It appears that the funds contributed to the benefits program was funneled into this scholarship fund.
During the 2000-01 year, Board Member Dr. Gary Schneider suggested that UTRA work toward establishing an endowment to fund this scholarship. In November the Board committed $6400 of UTRA funds from a Certificate of Deposit and other funds toward the endowment which required $15,000. An appeal to retirees for tax deductible donations was made. The Newsletter updated the scholarship appeal: June 7, 2001 – need $4000 to reach the goal by December 31, 2001. After that time $25,000 would be needed to establish an endowment. The following chart shows the progress due to the generous support of UT Retirees:
The UTRA Newsletter keeps members interested and informed in supporting the scholarship.
