What is the UTILA?
The Office of Human Resources, Learning and Organizational Development, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Engagement, offers the University of Tennessee Inclusive Leadership Academy (UTILA). This academy is designed to embody the mission, vision and values of the University of Tennessee while reinforcing the leadership behaviors that are essential for advancing diversity and inclusion.
The purpose of the UTILA is to provide a thoughtful and intentional learning experience that will equip leaders with the content knowledge, leadership behaviors, and support to effectively lead our diverse workforce and create a culture of inclusion.
Who is the target audience?
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is designed for exempt staff and faculty.
What are the requirements?
The UTILA consists of 6 in-person sessions that are two hours each. The UTILA utilizes the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) as an assessment of intercultural competence during the sessions. Extended learning is also required through the use of between session readings, video reviews and reflection assignments. To uphold the integrity of the UTILA cohort structure, participants are expected to make a commitment to attending all sessions and completing all work.
How can you be involved?
There are two ways to participate in the UTILA. One opportunity is in a fall semester, another is spring semester.
2020 Fall cohort:
The University of Tennessee Inclusive Leadership Academy Fall Cohort is an open enrollment opportunity for leaders across campus to engage in the cohort structure through an application/selection process. Applications are required for the fall cohort. To apply, candidates include a completed application, their own letter of impact, and a letter of support from their direct leader. The application deadline is June 19, 2020. The Fall Cohort begins in August and ends in December.
In addition to the requirements above, there is a cohort capstone project that is presented by the cohort to their peers, leaders, and instrumental constituents. Upon successful completion of the University of Tennessee Inclusive Leadership Academy, the participants will be awarded a UT Inclusive Leaders pin and a certificate acknowledging program completion as a representation of their commitment to creating an inclusive campus. Cohort size is capped at 20 participants per cohort.
2021 Spring intact cohort:
The University of Tennessee Inclusive Leadership Academy is also offered to intact groups at the request of the department/unit/division leader. Dates and times for spring intact sessions will be determined based on the availability of the requestor and facilitator calendars. There is a limit of two individual intact UTILA sessions in spring.

Are there deadlines?
Fall cohort application deadline is June 19, 2020.
Any intact group/department is required to express interest for a Spring Intact session by November 6, 2020. Dates and attendees for spring intact groups will be set by mid-December of the preceding year. Due to planning and other commitments, these dates may not be altered.
Who finances the IDI assessment?
For the Fall cohort the IDI is included within the program itself, there are no additional costs. For the Spring cohort program, the requesting department is responsible for cost of the IDI Assessment, which is currently $18.00 for each individual (January 2020).
Who makes arrangements for meeting rooms/reservations?
For the fall cohort, UTK-HR will reserve rooms and make necessary reservations. For spring intact groups the requesting department makes those arrangements.
