946-CARE for Distressed Faculty and Staff

UT’s top priority is the safety and well-being of faculty, staff, and students. The 946-CARE (865-946-2273) program is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, to help faculty and staff maintain a secure and healthy working environment.

We’re Here to Help

Call 946-CARE (865-946-2273) if you need help and don’t know where to start or to share your concern for others. Your call will be handled with the utmost sensitivity and concern, and trained HR professionals will carefully assess the situation and take appropriate action.

While no list can be exhaustive, the following are signs of troubling behaviors you may notice in yourself or others.

  • Depression
  • Fixation on weapons
  • Anger or paranoia
  • Chemical dependency
  • Social isolation
  • Zealotry-racial, religious, political, etc.
  • Pushing the limits of acceptable behavior
  • Contempt for authority
  • Newly acquired bad traits
  • Newly acquired poor personal hygiene
  • Verbal threats, bullying
  • Discussion or act of stalking and harassing others

946-CARE (865-946-2273) lines are answered by trained HR professionals Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The line is answered by the UT Police Department after hours and during holidays and administrative closings.

Case Management and Response Team

The 946-CARE Response Team is an integral part of the 946-CARE program; utilizing best practices to provide support to distressed faculty and staff. The response team meets monthly and as-needed for case management and/or threat assessment to determine appropriate action. The team is chaired by a representative from Human Resources and its members include representatives from the following departments:

  • Human Resources
  • Equal Opportunity and Accessibility
  • Office of the Provost
  • UT Police Department
  • UT Psychological Clinic
  • Office of the General Counsel (advisory)
  • Ad hoc members, include but are not limited to, the Office of Title IX, UT Institute of Agriculture, and Office of Communications.
